Welcome to the Department of Geology

The Department of Geology at Post-Graduate College of Science, Saifabad was established on January 1, 1972 as an undergraduate Department, and later upgraded as Post-Graduate Department in 1980.

Courses and specialization:

The Department offers B.Sc. course in Geology with combination of Mathematics and Physics (MPG). In addition, it offers M.Sc. course in Geology with special papers in Advanced Igneous Petrology and Advanced Hydrogeology. The intake of students in B.Sc. course is 30 and in M.Sc. course 20.

Infrastructure:

The Department possesses rare collections of rock-forming minerals, economic minerals, precious stones, rocks, crystal models, structural geology models and fossils. The Department has Geotechnical Lab. and other laboratories equipped with field equipments, a number of petrological and ore microscopes, research microscopes, spectrophotometer, flame-photometer, resistivity meters, a DST-FIST sponsored Fluid Inclusions Lab., computer lab., Jaw Crusher and Cup Mill.

Faculty Profile:

The Department has a team of dedicated teaching staff specialized in various fields of geology including mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, structural geology, hydrogeology, economic geology, mining, exploration, remote sensing and environmental geology.

Research and Awards:

The Department is equipped with adequate infrastructure to carryout research work. Eight research scholars, mostly CSIR research fellows have obtained Ph.Ds’ using the laboratory and library facilities of the Department. About 85 research papers have been published by the faculty members of the Department during the last one and half decade.

The Department has been identified by the DST, New Delhi under FIST Program and strengthened the labs. by adding equipment, software and books worth Rs.35.00 lakhs. The Department has successfully carried out two major research projects funded by DST and UGC, together costing Rs. 17.15 lakhs. At present, a major research project (Rs.16.00 lakh) funded by DST is in operation.

Field training:

Field training is an important component of the curriculum for B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses in Geology. While the students of M. Sc. (Previous) are trained in geological mapping by the faculty in the type-areas, those of M.Sc. (final) are taken on geological excursion to study geologically important terrains.

Scope for higher education and job opportunities for M.Sc.(Geology):

The students of M.Sc.(Geology) have a scope for higher education in the field of research leading to Ph.D. They can also appear for all India “National Eligibility Test (NET)” conducted twice in a year by the UGC-CSIR, New Delhi to be eligible to get financial assistance in the form of a research fellowship for carrying out Ph.D.

Job opportunities for M.Sc. (Geology) are plenty. The premier earth science organizations of which some are among “Navaratnas” of India, often appoint Geologists include Geological Survey of India (GSI), Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC), Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Coal India Limited (CIL), State Ground Water Department (SGWD), State Mines and Geology (SMG), Singareni Colleries Company Limited (SGCL) and other geological research institutes and organizations.

The Department .of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi has sanctioned an amount of Rs.35.00 lakhs under DST-FIST Programme to the Department for strengthening infrastructural facilities.

The students after completion of M.Sc. are getting recruited through campus recruitments by MNCs like ONGC, Reliance, Infotech, Wipro, Infosys etc.
