The University College of Science, Saifabad, a Constituent College of Osmania University, is situated at Masabtank in Hyderabad. It was established in 1951 in the prime locality at the foot hills of Banjara Hills. Originally the college offered only intermediate courses and was situated at Gulbarga of erstwhile Nizam state.

 

Subsequently it was shifted to the present location. Late Nawab Ali Yavar Jung Bahadur, the then Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University, used his benevolent offices to acquire the present College campus at Saifabad (in the western part of Hyderabad) from the former Government of Hyderabad.

 

The serene and sprawling campus which spreads over a vast stretch of land measuring about 18.173 acres with lush gardens is in complete contrast to the choas of trafic prevailing outside the college . A fossil confier wood of Araucarioxylon Species of early jurrasic age(175 million years old) which was gifted to the college by the Geological Survey of india(Southern Region, Hyderabad). warmly welcomes any enthusiastic visitor to the college..

The University has taken special interest in giving a face-lift to the entire campus, and in protecting the valuable open sports field. A new library building was constructed in 2003 and efforts for additional space in first floor are under way. A new building for Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biotechnology has been constructed during the period from 2003 to 2005 under two phases. This new P.G. Block caters to the needs of the said departments and provides a modern Seminar Hall with a capacity of 120 seats.

 

For the past 5 decades, the College has shown steady progress, as enumerated below for the cause of higher education as per the contemporary needs of the students.

1951-1960 The decade of establishment and taking roots.
1961-1970 The decade of strengthening Science Laboratories.
1971-1980 The decade of starting rare combinations at U.G.
1981-1990 The decade of blooming: PG courses were started in Botany, Geology and Zoology in 1980, Chemistry in 1984 and Physics in 1990, Applied Maths in 1998
1991-2000 The decade of fruition: The programmed spurt in research in various fields brought this College to global recognition.

 

All the departments are actively engaged in research work. The research labs in the College are fully equipped with modern infrastructure.

 

2001 – onwards The decade of improving infrastructural facilities:

    Add-on corses in English and Human Rights. Ethical Values and Enivironment for PG students has been introduced uring the academic year 2009-2010

     

    In the brief history of 29 years as a Post-Graduate institution, the College is proud of its academic achievements. The generous funding for research by UGC, DST, CSIR, ICAR, ONGC, and DAE reflects the active and fruitful research activity being carried out in the College. So far, about 30 major/minor research projects have been completed successfully in various disciplines in the College and at present some research projects are in operation. Two faculty members, namely, Dr. J. Ratnakar (Geology) and Dr. D. Ravinder (Physics) were choosen for national UGC -- Career Awards/UGC – Research Award.

     

    Students enrolled in this college are mostly from the rural areas and courses offered are in the core subjects that form the base line for rural development through extension and research activities. Thus the College offers ample opportunities for students to study and to get involved in nation-building activities through which eventually, they become responsible citizens with excellent careers.
